Do I have to give my employee time off for medical and dental appointments?
Yes but you don’t have to pay them. You can also ask them to arrange their appointments at the beginning or end of their normal working hours. Part-time workers should be able to arrange such appointments outside their normal working hours.
Can I specify when they can take time off for medical and dental appointments?
You can ask them to arrange their appointments at the beginning or end of their normal working hours but if that isn’t possible you should let them attend when an appointment is available. Part-time workers should be able to arrange such appointments outside their normal working hours.
Can I ask part-timers to make medical and dental appointments outside their normal working hours?
Yes you can. For most appointments your part-time employees should be able to attend any such appointments outside their normal working hours. Be prepared to be flexible though in case a specialist or other health professional has limits on their availability that mean the employee must go during their normal working hours.
If I pay my employees for medical and dental appointments can I ask them to make up the time?
Yes but be sure that you treat part-time and full-time employees equally – it is relatively easy for a part-time worker to make up hours but much more difficult for a full-time worker to do so.
